Lincoln Half-Marathon Recap

I survived another half-marathon!

On Sunday, I finished my sixth half-marathon. Crossing the finish line is always such an amazing feeling. Just five years ago, I couldn’t run one mile without stopping to walk. Finishing yet another half-marathon reminds me of how far I have come!

If you missed my live tweets pre- and post-race or my mom’s tweets during the Lincoln Half-Marathon, here is a recap of the race in photos.

The BF and I stopped at the Embassy Suites Saturday to pick up our race packets and race T-shirts. This is always when I start to feel a little nervous because I realize the race is actually happening!

Follow me during the Lincoln Half Marathon

On Sunday, I will run my sixth half-marathon!!

I’m so excited (and nervous) for the race. This will be the fifth time I run the Lincoln Half-Marathon, but I always have a lot of anxiety before the race.

The BF will be running his first full marathon! I’m so proud of him. Training has been challenging, but he has really pushed himself out of his comfort zone. I can’t wait to see him cross the finish line!

I don’t have a time goal this year. I’m running with the BF, supporting and encouraging him for the first half of his race.

I will be live Tweeting before and after the race, so get up early (the race starts at 7 a.m.) and see what I’m up to pre- and post-run.

You can also follow me during the Lincoln Half-Marathon to see how I’m doing!

You will be able to see what time I cross the following splits: 5K, 10K, 15K and the finish.

Good luck to all the runners!

What I Eat in a Day

People often ask me what I eat. What I eat varies from day to day and week to week. But I always try to eat a variety of fresh produce, consume enough protein to help my muscles repair from my workouts and eat foods that will energize me. And, of course, have a special treat occasionally!

To give you an idea of what I typically eat, I will share a page out of my food and fitness diary once a week.

Check out what I ate on Friday! This is really what my meals and workouts look like on a typical weekday, although I did have a few treats toward the end of the day!

I started my day with CrossFit! Our WOD (Workout of the Day) was 5 rounds of 1 rope climb, 10 toes to bar, 20 lunges with a 45 lb. bar overhead and 30 jump rope double unders.

I had to modify a bit. Rope climbing gives me flashbacks of elementary school (when I was an overweight child) and could barely pull myself off the ground. I always felt so embarrassed. Well, I’m no longer overweight, but I still can’t pull myself up a rope. Luckily, I never feel embarrassed in my CrossFit class and always just do what I can. My CrossFit coach, Bryce, draped towels over the pull up bar and I did little jumps pulling myself up with the towel. It, surprisingly, made my arms burn.

The whole workout was tough and intense. I always struggle with toes to bar and lunges with a bar overhead always get my heart rate going.

When I got home, I made a cup of Traditional Medicinals Ginger Tea. Ginger is really good for digestion and having a cup of hot water or hot tea in the morning helps get your digestive system going.

Today is a fab day!

I started my day with a run and wore my new Under Armour Toxic Six Running Shoes!! I’m super excited about these shoes. First, they are bright and fun. OK, that’s not the most important requirement for a running shoe, but it helps motivate me to run. Second, they are super light and the laces are on the side, which helps alleviate pressure on the top of the foot during long runs. I’m going to train in these for the next month and wear them at the Lincoln Half-Marathon!

Last week, I wrote about my struggle with not fitting into my clothes and feeling frumpy, but not wanting to part with my clothes because of the memories I have with them.

Well after I wrote that blog, I decided to purchase a new pencil skirt. I wear skirts to work almost every day and knew I would feel more confident if I had a fab skirt that fits. My shopping trip was a disaster. Nothing fit correctly and I left empty handed. Later in the week, New York & Co. was having a major sale online and I ended up ordering a black pencil skirt. I didn’t have high expectations because of my bad luck in the fitting room. But I tried it on this morning and it fit perfectly!!!

The most exciting thing is that it is a petite size 6!! What!??!! I have never in my entire life worn a size 6. At my heaviest, I wore a size 14 or 16. For the past few years I have been stuck at a size 10. I don’t even know who I am today.

After getting dressed and feeling quite fabulous, I made a delish breakfast and an amazing spring-inspired smoothie for my mid-morning snack. The day just keeps getting better.

For breakfast, I toasted two Van’s Organic Blueberry Waffles and topped them with my homemade Strawberry Chia Seed Jam, a tablespoon of almond butter and two teaspoons of pure maple syrup. Tuesday was National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day and I felt bad that I didn’t celebrate this important holiday. So this was my belated and healthy way of celebrating.

A few hours later, I had my smoothie. I’ve been trying to experiment with new smoothies because I tend to do the same thing - almond milk, frozen banana, kale or spinach, protein powder and spices. So I replaced my usual almond milk with coconut water and used mango, which I don’t use that often. This smoothie was so sweet and yummy. It tasted very spring-ish!!

Sweet Green Smoothie

1 cup coconut water

1 cup kale

1 cup frozen mango

1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder

1 tbsp. ground flaxseeds

Place all ingredients in blender. Blend until smooth.

Too Hot to Handle: Tips for exercising in the heat

It’s hot out there!

I’ve been struggling to get my runs in lately because it’s been over 90 degrees when I get off work. Too hot!!

When the temperature is blazing, it’s important to take precautions when working out outside. I get headaches easily when the temp is high so I just don’t workout in the high heat. When it’s over 80 degrees, I take it easy. If it’s over 90, I exercise inside. Listen to your body and don’t push it too hard.

What to do when you see a mountain lion while running (and other safety tips for runners)

I recently realized that I’m an anxious runner.

When I’m on the hike and bike trail, I often look over my shoulder thinking that someone is behind me. My heart pounds a little harder when I pass someone on the trail. My stomach flutters when a biker passes by.

It gets worse. When I’m running past the Kearney Canal, I imagine a grizzly man crawling up out of the tall grass and coming for me. When I run under the railroad tracks on Railroad Street, I’m always sure someone is waiting there hidden under the dark, wet underpass.

When I run on the south side of Yanney Park, I keep my eyes peeled for mountian lions.
